Completely Forgetful

So I keep forgetting that we are supposed to be writing in this blog for our class. Hopefully, it's not held against me. I just get distracted with all of the other homework that I have and writing stories for this class.

Anyways, I think that the class is running a lot smoother now that the class is getting used to InDesign. Also, having a set font and layouts make life a whole lot easier also. Emily, Chad, and Mel on the computer have been an immense help.

I also think that getting our articles in on Tuesday instead of the day they are due will make everyone's lives a lot less stressful. Everyone will help edit and that way we don't have to deal with careless mistakes. Also then on Thursday for layout day we will be able to just insert the stories and photos and can spend time focusing on the overall paper and how it looks.

I think that people's stories are also improving as we go along in the class. They are starting to pick up tips and learn how to write better and more interesting stories.

Stressed by the stress

This last weekend was so stressful for me. I had literally 100 online spanish activities to complete by midnight last night. I also had a spanish test to study for because my test was today (with might I add one of the hardest spanish teachers at Cabrillo-according to ratemyproffessor.com--and had I known this I would have dropped and switched when I could). I also had an entire history book to read by thursday. And on top of that the article to write for this class that is supposed to be due thursday as well.

Kind of ironic how I am stressing out about writing an article to help my fellow students de-stress. I almost got to the point when I thought why? Why put so much energy in to this article? It is a one unit class. ONE UNIT. On top of the 19 units that I am taking this semester. But I realized that I couldn't just give up on the article because that would mean so much more than just giving up on the article. If it wasn't for my love of journalism putting this much time and energy in to a one unit class would not be worth it. This is what brings to my next point, why is this class only worth one unit? It astounds me that Andre's class where a lot less work and time is involved is three units, and yet the class where a small group of students is expected to research, write, and produce the newspaper for the entire school is only one unit. This just astounds me. I think something should be done. I think that more people would be willing to put their all in to it if they felt like it was helping out their schedule. If it wasn't for my love of journalism I know I would be kind of skeptical about the whole situation too.

Sorry, a little side-tracked. This blog is about my stress and it all coming together. So anyways before today I was really stressing about everything working out or not. I was glad to recieve time to work on articles today in class. I felt like this was really beneficial for the class period because I think a lot of other people are stressing out right now too. I got a lot of work done on my article now all I have left to do is put it all together. So thank you to Emily, and whoever else, for deciding that we should have classtime to work on our articles.

About me

I noticed a couple people doing an "About me" section so I figured why not. This is also my first blog site, I never really caught on to the whole thing, more because I didn't take the time and also because I didn't know that it was so easy to get started. Now that I see how easy it really is I think I will continue to use it!

So about me, I am a journalism major, but writing has been in my blood since I could hold a pencil. I have always loved writing. When I was just 18 months old I started to write little things and illustrate them. In second grade I wrote my own little stories. And my passion to write has only grown since then. I took AP English and all that jazz in high school. Also in high school I worked for the school yearbook as the copy and overall editor. We used InDesign, I'm not an expert, but I do have some experience with that. Then after High School I went on to San Diego State University for my freshman year. While I was down there I got a job working for a local softball magazine called Softball Today and I covered stories and wrote articles for them. If you would like to check them out by the way you can through google, and search Tanya Mutz Softball Today. So I have some experience in the journalism aspect, but am still learning to gain more. I haven't worked for a newspaper before, but it does interest me and I am willing to put a lot in to it.

Aside from writing I also really enjoy, you probably guessed it, playing softball. I am a pitcher and I love the game. I have been playing softball since I was eight years old and haven't gotten enough of it yet. I am going to play for the Seahawks this year, so feel free to come out and watch a game. I also like spending time with my friends and family, scrapbooking, art, watching tv, and photography. I like all types of music but my favorite is Country.

There is a lot more to me if you want to know just ask, but I think this is probably a long enough blog that you guys are getting bored with already! : ) I am really looking forward to working with all of you and turning this in to a great paper!

Comparing Two Papers

After comparing the layouts for the front page of USA Today and The Santa Cruz Sentinel, I have decided that I prefer USA Today's layout. I compared the two papers from September 5, 2008. The reason I did not care for the Sentinel's front page was because they have one main story that takes up the entire top fold (with the article and the photo) and it takes up half of the bottom fold. Finally after that story it gets in to two other stories, but they were only small sections. I preferred because there were four stores on the top fold. It was a little more cluttered but I prefer to get more information from a paper on the front page. Visually USA Today's paper caught my eye and drew me in to read more.
